The projects of AFRICAON are principally directed towards infants, the future of the entire Continent. We guarantee the children in our programs education, food, water, and health care. All our programs are carried out by local lay or religious organizations composed of African personnel.
This permits us to save on structural costs and to have results which are protracted over time by involving actively the local community through direct participation in our activities and by assisting in their formation and training. Africaon limits itself therefore, to sharing in the projects selected on the basis of the needs and priorities indicated by the communities themselves by coordinating their realization and monitoring the correct utilization of the designated funds. All work is financed through private donations which adhere to the “Long Distance Adoption” or by businessmen, firms and associations which support directly a specific project. We work in:
In this country we have some on going projects in collaboration with local lay, institutional, Diocesan, and non governmental associations. Currently, we operate in the poorest areas of the capital, Maputo. The outskirts of the capital have been subject to immigration of people coming from the outlying provinces caused by war and the flooding that devastated Mozambique in 2000. There is much poverty and a situation of “social exclusion” which have given rise to episodes of social unrest and bloody riots (2008 and 2009). The population of these people is very young (more than 40% under the age of 15) and the percentage of orphans is 20% of total residents. We are involved in several Centers for Orphans and nurseries in these areas. We promote courses for scholastic learning and we have organized groups of support for the most disadvantaged families.
We provide also food support, distribution of basic necessities, awareness of environmental conservation through the promotion of alternative cooking methods and food conservation. So far the beneficiaries of our initiatives in this country are several thousands of children.
In this country we have activated our projects in the region Kigoma. The region is located on the extreme western side of the country on the shore of Lake Tanganyika not far from the border with Burundi. Owing to its decentralized location, the presence of the State or other institutions is almost zero. The people who live here are very poor and live mainly on farming (corn, beans, coffee , bananas) and obviously, fishing.
The projects developed are destined to support schools and orphanages. The project for the assistance in the restructuring of the school of Kasanghezi has recently been concluded. Evaluations with our local correspondents are going on now to find new areas and modalities of new projects.
The projects are on going in the city of Daloa. Here we have sustained the operational dispensary since 2001 which is directed by the community of the Benedictine Nuns of Providence and who are assisted by local nursing and health personnel. The dispensary is open to everyone: men, women, children without distinction of nationality, ethnicity, or religion. The beneficiaries of the project are on average between 1,500 and 3,000 people. This number coincides with the number of ill patients who access the structure monthly. The dispensary has:
two consultation rooms two rooms for medications a room for specialized exams (diabetes, cardiology, ophthalmology, gynechology, etc) two counselling rooms for HIV patients the pharmacy where the main and essential prescriptions are found directly in the dispensary at the lowest prices an echography lab. Furthermore there is a exam laboratory, a Maternity and Infancy Centre where various services are assured for the pregnant women (prenatal consultation, HIV prevention) and vaccinations for children under five years old, and a nutritional centre. Also in the dispensary there is an operation area where minor surgery is performed (appendicitis, hernias, etc.).
